Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is a national collection in central Baghdad displaying specimens from local ecosystems, fossil remains, and objects showing how human civilizations developed. The exhibits span thousands of years and cover various aspects of natural history and human settlement.

The University of Baghdad founded this institution in 1946 as a national collection to preserve Iraq's natural heritage. Since then it has served as a center for studying and understanding the region's natural and cultural history.

The museum displays hunting practices and writing systems that shaped Iraqi society over thousands of years. These exhibits show how everyday activities and forms of knowledge influenced how people lived in this region.

The museum is located in central Baghdad and welcomes visitors Sunday through Thursday with guided tours available. Plan your visit for the morning hours since opening times are limited.

The museum works to bring back objects from inside and outside the country and has recently refreshed its displays. These restoration projects show a commitment to preserving a collection that faced long periods of risk.
