Aquaria KLCC, Public aquarium in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia.
Aquaria KLCC is a public aquarium beneath the convention centre in Kuala Lumpur, displaying more than five thousand marine animals across fifteen themed zones. The facility covers roughly sixty thousand square feet and includes tanks with coral reefs, tropical fish, and larger species such as nurse sharks and sea turtles.
The aquarium opened in the early 2000s as part of the development plan for the city center around the Petronas Towers. The facility has since expanded to showcase native species from the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.
The name combines the Latin word for water with the location beneath the twin towers, making it a popular stop for families visiting central Kuala Lumpur. School groups and weekend visitors gather around the large viewing panels, where children press close to watch turtles glide past or stingrays sweep along the sand.
The aquarium sits directly beneath the convention centre and opens daily from ten in the morning until seven in the evening. Visitors reach the entrance via an escalator from the ground floor, and the route follows a set path through the different zones.
A tunnel made of clear acrylic runs ninety meters through the largest tank, allowing visitors to walk beneath sharks, rays, and schools of fish. The tank holds roughly two and a half million liters of saltwater and recreates a reef habitat for species from several oceans.
