Villa Frontera, Village settlement near Chacalluta Airport in Arica, Chile
Villa Frontera is a village settlement on the northern bank of the Lluta River, marking the last Chilean coastal community before the Peruvian border. It has developed a substantial warehousing and commercial district concentrated near the border control area.
The settlement expanded significantly between the early 2000s and 2017, with its population more than doubling during this period. This growth was directly linked to increasing cross-border trade activity in the region.
The village name reflects its geographic position as the northernmost Chilean settlement, with 'Frontera' referring to its role as a border community. Daily life here centers on the proximity to Peru and the constant movement of goods and people crossing through.
The village sits on major transportation routes including Chile Route 5, the Pan-American Highway, and the western end of Chile Route 11. These connections make it easily accessible when traveling through the region.
A former railway line from the Tacna-Arica Railway passes through the village, though no local station was ever built here. Passenger service on this line ended in 2012.
