Alto de la Alianza Museum, Military museum at Intiorko Hill, Tacna, Peru
The Alto de la Alianza Museum is a circular building on Intiorko Hill housing military artifacts from the War of the Pacific, with cannons positioned at its entrance. Inside are letters, documents, uniforms, rifles, sabers, and a model depicting the armed confrontation between the allied and opposing forces.
The museum commemorates the Battle of Alto de la Alianza in 1880, when Peruvian and Bolivian forces fought against Chilean troops during the War of the Pacific. This battle was a turning point in the conflict and reshaped territorial boundaries in South America.
The exhibition displays uniforms, weapons, and personal items that reflect how soldiers lived through this conflict. These objects show the human side of the war and its lasting impact on the region.
The museum sits about 8 kilometers north of Tacna's downtown area and is easily accessible on the hillside, where visitors also get views across the surrounding landscape. It helps to arrive in the morning or early afternoon for the best light on the outdoor exhibits.
The museum occupies the exact spot where the 1880 battle took place, and displays items that archaeologists recovered directly from the battlefield. Unexploded ammunition and other artifacts offer direct evidence of how the fighting unfolded at this location.
