Khor Fakkan, Coastal port city in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Khor Fakkan is a port city on the Gulf of Oman coast in the Emirate of Sharjah, spreading around a natural bay where the sea meets the Shumayliyah Mountains. The settlement sits between rocky slopes and sandy beaches, with a waterfront road connecting the center to residential neighborhoods that reach up into the mountain foothills.
Portuguese traders and soldiers arrived here in the 16th century and built a fortress to secure shipping routes into the region. After the Portuguese left, the place remained a fishing harbor until the modern port facilities were built in the 1970s.
Restaurants along the waterfront serve fresh fish brought to shore by fishermen each morning, maintaining a tradition that has continued through generations. Many locals spend their evenings in the public parks that line the bay, enjoying the cooler air from the sea.
The beaches are accessible year-round, with the months between October and April offering more comfortable temperatures for longer outdoor visits. The main road along the coast runs through the entire city and makes finding your way around much easier.
Archaeologists found graves and settlement remains under the Rifaisa Dam from the second millennium BC, showing that people lived along this coast more than 3000 years ago. The reservoir now covers this part of the past while supplying water to the modern city.
