Camp Rhino, Military base in Registan Desert, Afghanistan
Camp Rhino is a military base located in the Registan Desert in Afghanistan with a paved runway and protective perimeter walls. The facility spreads across isolated desert terrain and was designed to support air operations and ground personnel.
The base was established in November 2001 as the first American land installation in Afghanistan following the start of military operations. This founding marked a turning point in the region's military presence.
The site once served as a hunting ground where Arab falconers traveled to practice their craft in the desert. This heritage shaped how people understood the location as a destination that drew visitors from afar.
The base sits in a remote desert region with no natural water sources nearby. Supply and resource delivery therefore required special arrangements to keep operations running.
The capture of this installation was part of one of the longest operations of its type in military history. Executing this mission required complex coordination and unprecedented logistical efforts.
