Forward Operating Base Edinburgh, Forward operating base in Musa Qala District, Afghanistan.
Forward Operating Base Edinburgh was a military installation in Musa Qala District, in northern Helmand Province, Afghanistan, equipped with several gravel helipads. The base sat at roughly 800 meters above sea level and functioned as a forward position to support operations across the surrounding area.
The base was established in 2007 to support British and American operations during Operation Herrick in Musa Qala District. It was closed in July 2012 after five years of active use.
Several units passed through the base over the years, including the Royal Gurkha Rifles and Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, each bringing their own routines and practices. The presence of both British and American forces gave the base a mixed character that shaped daily life there.
The base was located in a remote area with no civilian facilities nearby and could only be reached through military channels during its operational years. It has been closed since 2012 and is not open to the public.
Ross Kemp visited the base and filmed a documentary episode there about daily life with the Royal Irish Regiment. That footage remains one of the few publicly available records of what the site looked like from the inside.
