Moxico Province

Moxico is a province in eastern Angola that spans a large territory with diverse geographical features across nine municipalities. Luena serves as the provincial capital and main hub, positioned at a considerable distance from the national capital.

The region experienced major upheaval during Angola's civil conflict, with Luena playing a strategic role in military operations until the war ended. Following 2002, the province entered a period of gradual recovery and development.

Several ethnic groups make their home across the nine municipalities, each maintaining distinct languages and traditions that shape daily life and community practices. These communities coexist with their own customs, creating a region where cultural diversity is visible in how people interact and live.

The province is remote and requires planning for longer travel times when visiting, as it sits far from the country's main hubs. Luena is the central point for accommodations and supplies, making it the logical base for exploring the wider region.

Cameia National Park lies within the province and contains grasslands plus water systems that support a range of wildlife species. These natural landscapes remain less known than other protected areas in the country yet attract visitors interested in exploring Angola's wild spaces.
