Seven Lakes, Glacial lake system in Los Ríos Region, Chile

Seven Lakes is a system of interconnected glacial lakes in the Los Ríos Region of southern Chile, comprising Panguipulli, Calafquén, Riñihue, Pirihueico, Neltume, Pellaifa, and Pullinque. The lakes sit within a large drainage basin surrounded by forested terrain and volcanic peaks.

These lakes formed during glacial periods when massive ice sheets carved deep valleys that later filled with meltwater. The landscape took its current shape thousands of years ago through these glacial processes and remains largely unchanged since then.

The names of several lakes come from the Mapudungun language spoken by indigenous communities who inhabited this region. Calafquén means "lake like a sea," reflecting how the Mapuche people perceived this landscape.

Visitors can access these lakes through several entry points and should plan for multiple days to explore the entire system. The towns of Villarrica and Pucón work well as bases for accommodation and gathering local information.

Four volcanoes surround this lake system: Villarrica, Quetrupillán, Lanín, and Mocho-Choshuenco, creating a distinctive geological landscape with active geothermal features. This combination of glacial valleys and volcanic peaks makes the region geologically unusual and visually striking.
