Quetrupillán

Quetrupillán, Stratovolcano in Los Ríos Region, Chile.

Quetrupillán is a stratovolcano with two snow-covered summits rising to 2,360 meters between Villarrica and Lanín, located within Villarrica National Park. Its slopes display layered geological features from different eruption cycles, with lava flows and rock formations visible across its flanks.

The volcano underwent its largest eruption roughly 1,650 years ago, dispersing massive volumes of rock and ash across the region. This event left deep geological marks and permanently altered the mountain's shape and structure.

The mountain holds deep spiritual significance for the Mapuche people and features prominently in their traditional stories as a sacred place. This connection to indigenous beliefs continues to shape how local communities relate to and respect the landscape.

The best time to visit is during warmer months when snow does not block higher sections and trails remain passable. Hikers should consider hiring local guides, as mountain routes can be technically demanding and require proper preparation.

The volcano contains multiple subsidiary craters and lava dome structures, with two distinctive lakes on its southern side - Laguna Azul and Laguna Blanca - formed by earlier eruptions. These lakes are fed by underground springs and create a calm feature within this otherwise rugged mountainous terrain.
