Cuevas volcánicas Villarrica

Cuevas volcánicas Villarrica, Lava tube network in Villarrica, Chile.

Description

Villarrica Volcanic Caves form a network of underground passages stretching roughly 1,300 meters at an elevation of about 1,140 meters. These tunnels were created by ancient lava flows that continued moving beneath the solidified surface, carving out these natural hollow spaces.

History

These volcanic caves formed over 2 million years ago when the outer layer of lava hardened while molten rock continued flowing underneath, creating natural tunnels. The caves stand as evidence of the region's early volcanic activity.

Culture

The caves sit near Villarrica Volcano, called Rucapillán in the Mapuche language, which held spiritual importance for indigenous communities in the region. Visitors can sense the deep connection between the land and local traditions when walking through these underground spaces today.

Practical

Wear sturdy shoes when visiting, as the paths inside are uneven and can be slippery, especially after rain. Bring a jacket because temperatures underground stay much cooler than at the surface.

Did you know?

The cave ceiling contains ferromagnetic minerals that become visible under light, creating a shimmering effect. Notably, plant roots from the surface penetrate down and extend as far as 20 meters into the lava channels.
