Hijuelas

Hijuelas is a commune in the Valparaíso Region that spans a large rural area. The landscape is marked by flower fields stretching toward the Aconcagua River, with the settlement spread across several neighborhood centers.

The area was an agricultural center before Spanish arrival, with indigenous groups developing farming techniques along the Aconcagua River. These agricultural foundations continued and expanded during the colonial period that followed.

The town centers on flower growing, and this focus shapes how people here spend their time and celebrate together. Colorful fields surround the area, and local gatherings reflect this agricultural tradition that defines the community.

As a rural area with scattered settlements, allow yourself time to get oriented, especially when exploring less central parts. A vehicle is helpful for visiting different areas of the commune and reaching the flower fields.

The naturalist Charles Darwin visited this area in the 19th century and recorded the farming and landscapes he encountered. His observations helped shape how people understood South American agriculture and terrain.
