Laguna de Paca, Lake in Junín Valley, Peru
Laguna de Paca is a lake in the Andean valley of Junín, situated across the districts of Paca, Chunán, and Pancán. It lies approximately 4 kilometers north of Jauja at an elevation of 3,418 meters (11,213 feet).
The lake formed during the Late Pliocene era through sedimentary and glacial processes. Its location near Jauja, a former regional center before Lima became Peru's capital, ties it to the area's past.
Remains of stone structures around the lake show traces of the Huanca people who lived here centuries ago. These archaeological sites shape how visitors experience the landscape today.
The western shore has restaurants that serve fresh trout caught from the lake. Visitors should prepare for the high altitude and cool temperatures, especially if planning time on the water.
The water level stays constant throughout the year, and floating mats of rushes and sedges line the southern shore. These natural vegetation islands create an unexpected ecological feature at high altitude.
