Cajabamba Province

Cajabamba Province is an administrative division in Cajamarca Department, Peru, located at approximately 2,654 meters elevation. The territory comprises four districts spread across roughly 1,807 square kilometers of highland and mountain terrain.

The province was established on January 2, 1850, and has functioned as an administrative unit ever since. Its long existence has shaped the structure and governance of the four districts that form it today.

Farming methods rooted in tradition shape how local people work the land across these highlands. These practices remain central to community life and identity in the region.

Temperatures range from about 8 to 24 degrees Celsius depending on the season, making the highlands generally cool. The driest months occur between June and August, while rainfall is more frequent during other times of year.

The region receives roughly 992 millimeters of annual rainfall, which supports diverse farming activities across different elevations. This moisture enables various crops to grow at different heights throughout the mountainous terrain.
