Suyo District, Administrative district in Ayabaca Province, Peru
Suyo is an administrative district in Ayabaca Province in northwestern Peru. The area sits in a hilly region with several waterways and agricultural lands that form the backbone of the local economy.
The district was founded on January 2, 1857, as one of the ten original administrative divisions of Ayabaca Province. Since its establishment, it has served as a regional administrative center in this remote Andean area.
Local inhabitants maintain traditional festivals throughout the year, with religious ceremonies drawing participants from across northern Peru to the district.
The Pan-American Highway runs nearby and connects the district with Peru and Ecuador. Visitors should keep in mind that the area is mountainous and may require traveling on remote roads to reach smaller settlements.
The area is known for several mountain lakes like Laguna Prieta, which are vital for irrigation of fields across the region. These natural water sources support the survival of rural communities in this dry Andean landscape.
