Estadio Miguel Grau, Football stadium in Piura, Peru
Estadio Miguel Grau is a football stadium in central Piura, in northern Peru, with concrete stands, metal roofing, and an artificial turf pitch. The ground can hold around 18,000 spectators and has several entrance gates as well as dedicated areas for media and official sporting events.
The stadium was built in the late 1950s and was at the time the largest sports facility in northern Peru. Decades later it underwent major renovations to bring it up to national and international standards.
The stadium is named after Miguel Grau Seminario, a naval officer born in Piura who became a national symbol during the War of the Pacific in the 19th century. His name appears throughout the city, and the stadium is one of the most visible signs of how the people of Piura honor his memory.
The stadium sits in central Piura and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport, with parking available nearby. For big matches or events, arriving early is a good idea as the entrances can get crowded quickly.
The artificial turf installed in the early 2000s was one of the first of its kind in a Peruvian stadium of this size. This allowed matches to continue through the rainy season, when natural grass in the region tends to deteriorate quickly.
