Chordeleg Canton, Mountain canton capital in Azuay Province, Ecuador
Chordeleg is a mountain canton capital in Azuay Province, located across the Andean region with several rivers flowing through it, including the Santa Barbara and Pungo Huayco. The area includes multiple administrative parishes spread across the mountainous terrain.
The area became a canton in 1992, building upon a settlement established by the Cañari people in ancient times. The region has maintained a continuous tradition of craftsmanship and pottery production that stretches back centuries.
Local artisans focus on creating delicate gold and silver filigree jewelry, a tradition that shapes how the town looks and functions in its everyday life. You will notice the jewelry stores and workshops scattered throughout the center, reflecting this long-standing craft heritage.
The best way to explore the area is on foot, walking through the streets to visit the workshops and shops at your own pace. Comfortable shoes are important since the terrain is hilly and paths vary in elevation.
The area received UNESCO Creative City recognition in 2017 for its outstanding tradition of craftsmanship and metalworking techniques. This international honor highlights how the local artisanal skills are valued around the world.
