Chordeleg Canton, Mountain canton capital in Azuay Province, Ecuador
The canton spans 104 square kilometers across the Andean region, featuring a network of rivers including the Santa Barbara and Pungo Huayco.
Established as a canton in April 1992, Chordeleg evolved from an ancient settlement where Cañari people developed pottery techniques over 5000 years ago.
Local artisans maintain workshops producing gold and silver filigree jewelry, with more than one hundred jewelry stores displaying their craftsmanship in the town center.
The population reached 12,197 residents in 2022, with a density of 120 people per square kilometer across five administrative parishes.
The UNESCO Creative City designation in 2017 recognized the canton's exceptional artisanal heritage and continuous tradition of metalworking and ceramics.
