El Empalme Canton

El Empalme Canton is an administrative region in Guayas Province with predominantly rural character and agricultural activity. The territory consists of flat to gently rolling land divided by simple road networks and scattered settlements.

The region began developing in the 1920s through timber extraction and resource use. A major wave of migration in the 1940s shaped how the territory became populated and settled.

The area is home to multiple ethnic communities living throughout the rural territory. These different groups shape daily life with their own customs and ways of living together in the region.

The area connects to Guayaquil via paved roads and has a working regional transport network. Several bus companies operate routes linking settlements, making it possible to get around the canton.

Beyond agricultural use, the region contains a forest reserve near the Daule-Peripa Dam that protects native wildlife. This woodland area provides habitat for many animal and plant species found in primary forest ecosystems.
