Huimeki Communal Reserve

The Huimeki Communal Reserve spans 141,234 hectares along the northeastern border of Peru, featuring dense rainforest ecosystems and numerous river networks.

The Peruvian government established this protected area on October 25, 2012, as part of a trilateral conservation initiative with Ecuador and Colombia.

The reserve name combines elements from the three local ethnic groups: Huitoto, Mestizos, and Kichwa del Putumayo, who maintain their traditional practices in the area.

The National Service of Protected Natural Areas manages the reserve, implementing sustainable resource management strategies for local communities and wildlife protection.

This reserve forms a critical ecological corridor with La Paya National Park in Colombia and serves as a resting point for migratory birds traveling from South America.
