ARA Uruguay, Museum ship in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
ARA Uruguay is a steel-hulled vessel with teak sheathing and three masts, divided into several decks with exhibits about Argentine naval operations. The interior shows how officers and crew lived and worked aboard this type of warship.
Built in England in 1874, the ship served the Argentine Navy for nearly 50 years as an active warship. It was later converted to ammunition storage before eventually becoming a museum vessel.
The vessel served as a training ground for Argentine naval officers and remains a symbol of the country's maritime heritage. Walking through its spaces, visitors can sense how important seafaring was to Argentina's development and identity.
The ship is moored at Dock 4 of Puerto Madero and welcomes visitors to explore its decks and cabins. Wear sturdy shoes as stairs are steep and the vessel moves slightly with the water.
In 1903, the vessel undertook a dramatic Antarctic rescue mission, pulling the entire crew of the Swedish ship Antarctic from severe weather and danger. This heroic action stands out in Argentine naval history as one of its most memorable achievements.
