Torre Monumental, Clock tower in Retiro district, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Torre de los Ingleses is a Renaissance-style tower standing about 75 meters tall in the Retiro district. Each of its four sides displays a clock face measuring roughly 4.4 meters across.
The tower was built between 1910 and 1916 by the British community in Buenos Aires to honor Argentina's independence centennial. It stands as a gift from that community to the city.
The tower displays shields and decorative elements from the United Kingdom, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland on its facade. These symbols reflect the British community that funded and shaped this landmark.
The observation deck is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and students and children under 12 enter without charge. Allow time to climb the stairs and enjoy the views from above.
The clock mechanism was made by Gillett & Johnston, a famous clockmaker in Croydon, England, and operates five bronze bells. The main bell weighs about seven tons and creates the bell sounds heard across the neighborhood.
