Teatro El Círculo, Opera house and theatre in Rosario, Argentina.
Teatro El Círculo is an opera house and theatre in Rosario, Argentina, situated at the corner of Laprida and Mendoza Streets with seating for around 1,450 people. The building was designed by German engineer George Goldammer and combines architectural influences from several European styles, visible both on the facade and inside the main hall.
The theatre was completed in the early 20th century, with Italian artist Luigi Levoni responsible for decorating the interior and exterior in 1904. Over the following decades, the building underwent several renovations while remaining one of the country's main theatre venues, and it is today recognized as a National Historical Monument of Argentina.
Teatro El Círculo has long been a gathering point for the social life of Rosario, hosting operas, ballets, and concerts that locals follow closely throughout the season. Inside, the ornate decoration of the early 20th century is still visible in the foyer and the main hall, giving visitors a sense of the city's artistic ambitions.
Guided tours of the building are available for visitors who want to explore the halls and the architecture, with each tour typically lasting about an hour. It is worth checking in advance whether a performance is scheduled, as this can affect which areas are accessible on the day.
Beneath the theatre building lie underground vaults that now house a Museum of Sacred Art, displaying sculptures by Eduardo Barnes. Many visitors who come for a performance never realize this space exists below their feet.
