Saint Joseph Charterhouse

Saint Joseph Charterhouse is a Carthusian monastery featuring 22 individual monastic cells, several chapels, a refectory, and guest facilities set in an isolated rural area. The structures are arranged around a central complex that anchors the quiet landscape.

The monastery was founded in 1998 when four monks from Grande Chartreuse selected the Campo de la Trinidad area for this new community. This establishment marked an important expansion of Carthusian presence in the region.

The community follows strict Carthusian rules centered on silence, prayer, and manual work within separate quarters. Monks maintain this daily rhythm through individual spiritual practice and structured communal moments.

Visits are not open to the general public and require advance contact with the monastery administration. Interested visitors should reach out well in advance to discuss and arrange any possible visit.

This monastery ranks as the third Carthusian foundation in the Americas and the second in Latin America. This rare distinction shows how the ancient monastic order has gradually expanded its presence beyond Europe.
