Aconquija National Park, National park in Tucumán Province, Argentina
Aconquija National Park is a large protected area in Tucumán Province that covers about 74,000 hectares across two distinct landscape zones. It stretches from tropical rainforest at lower elevations to high mountain peaks around 5,500 meters where vegetation thins out and alpine conditions take over.
The park was established in 2018 and combined the former Campo de los Alisos National Park with additional lands to create one larger protected area. This merger was designed to safeguard endangered animals and their habitats across the mountainous terrain for the long term.
Archaeological remains at sites like Ciudacita and Qhapaq Ñan show how ancient peoples lived in this region long ago. Walking through these areas, you can see evidence of settlements that thrived high in the mountains before modern times.
To reach the park, drive from Tucumán on National Route 38 toward Concepción, then take Route 65 to Alpachiri. From there, Provincial Route 330 continues to the park, a journey that requires a vehicle and road conditions can vary with the season.
The territory is home to around 400 vertebrate species, including guanacos, river otters, and rare mountain cats that live across different elevation zones. This variety exists because of the different climates and landscapes that range from rainforest to alpine terrain.
