Sierra del Aconquija, Mountain range in Tucumán Province, Argentina.
The Sierra del Aconquija is a mountain range extending northeast to southwest with peaks between 2,400 and 5,500 meters in elevation. Different climate zones and ecosystems stack up as elevation increases across its slopes.
The area became a national park in 2018, protecting roughly 178,000 hectares of land. This designation marked a turning point in safeguarding the region.
The range once marked the southern edge of the Inca Empire, and visitors can spot remnants of this ancient presence in higher elevations. These traces sit naturally within the landscape rather than in organized sites.
Layered clothing is important because temperature changes significantly with elevation across the range. Good hiking boots and plenty of water are necessary for any trail you choose.
The glaciers here feed water into Tucumán's lemon and blueberry farms below. Most visitors do not realize that the snow above directly supports agriculture in the valleys.
