Scientific Monument Moises Bertoni, Protected natural area in Alto Paraná, Paraguay.
The Scientific Monument Moises Bertoni is a protected natural area covering around 200 hectares in Alto Paraná province and preserves Atlantic forest remnants alongside two river valleys. The grounds feature forested slopes with dense vegetation and include a former residential compound with support buildings.
The site was declared a protected area in 1955 to preserve the former residence of Swiss naturalist Moises Santiago Bertoni, who conducted botanical research in the region from 1887 to 1929. His scientific work provided foundational knowledge about the local ecosystems.
The site served as the home of Swiss naturalist Moises Santiago Bertoni, whose personal collections and research records are preserved in the exhibition halls. The ten display rooms house manuscripts, personal belongings, and an extensive library that reflect his life's work studying the region.
Access is available from Ciudad del Este or Presidente Franco via unpaved roads requiring a high-clearance vehicle. Visitors should allow ample time for exploration since the grounds are expansive and pathways are not uniformly marked throughout the property.
The grounds contain a family burial ground near the main house with graves of Bertoni family members. The cemetery was eventually abandoned once all available burial spaces reached capacity.
