Patrimonio natural paisajístico Las Ánimas, Protected natural area near Palca, Bolivia
Patrimonio natural paisajístico Las Ánimas is a protected natural area near Palca in Bolivia, where clay and gravel columns rise among canyons and mountain ridges. The landscape covers a wide expanse with trails winding through valleys and along rock faces.
The rock structures formed after retreating glaciers that once covered the mountains carved canyons through meltwater. Over time, rainfall cut deeper channels and left the present columns standing.
The site takes its name from the pillar-like rock formations that locals interpret as petrified souls. In nearby villages, farmers still cultivate potatoes and quinoa using old techniques adapted to the high altitude.
Access usually happens in groups with a guide, starting from accommodations in La Paz and walking through the terrain. Warm clothing is necessary because the altitude lowers the temperature and wind blows between the rocks.
At certain light moments, the columns cast long shadows that change their shape and draw new silhouettes on the ground. Some rock faces show imprints of plants that were sealed into the soft layers long ago.
