Monoblock Building

The Monoblock Building is a 13-story structure rising 57 meters along Villazon Avenue, with a central hall organized around classrooms and administrative offices. The main library of the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés occupies a significant portion of the interior.

Construction began in 1937 on the site of a former military college, and the building held the status of Bolivia's tallest structure from 1947 to 1967. This long period of prominence shaped its role as a defining landmark in the city's growth.

This building serves as the main meeting point for students and faculty across all disciplines at the university. Daily classes, library use, and informal gatherings shape how the institution functions and connects its community.

The building is centrally located on Villazon Avenue, making it accessible on foot or by public transport. Keep in mind that access to certain areas like administrative offices or the library may be limited during university holidays and between semesters.

The design merges art deco style with patterns inspired by the ancient Tiwanaku culture, reflecting architect Emilio Villanueva's personal vision of modern Bolivian identity. This blend appears in decorative details throughout the building that visitors can spot while moving through its spaces.
