Cinema São Luiz, Art Deco movie theater in central Recife, Brazil
Cinema São Luiz is an Art Deco movie theater in central Recife with a grand auditorium decorated in gold, red, and green ornamental details. The seating spans two levels with a balcony section accommodating about 800 viewers.
The theater opened in 1952 on the site of a former Anglican chapel and operated continuously until 2007. It reopened in 2009 after extensive restoration work.
The entrance displays artwork by local artist Lula Cardoso Ayres and stained glass windows featuring flower designs by Aurora de Lima. These pieces create a welcoming artistic atmosphere as soon as you step inside.
The theater is located within the lower floors of a 14-story building in the city center, making it easy to find. The venue features current digital projection and sound technology for your viewing experience.
The floors are covered in marble while the walls are lined with jatoba wood, creating a warm natural quality rarely seen in modern cinemas. These materials give the space a distinctive character that enhances the viewing experience.
