Museu de Arte Moderna Aloísio Magalhães, Modern art museum in Boa Vista district, Recife, Brazil
The Museu de Arte Moderna Aloísio Magalhães occupies a three-story building with seven exhibition halls located in downtown Recife. The spaces house a collection of modern and contemporary artworks on display.
The building was constructed in the mid-19th century as the Recife International Club and served as City Hall from the 1930s to the 1960s. It was transformed into an art museum in 1981.
The museum showcases artworks by Brazilian artists and helps bring local and female perspectives to the forefront of modern art. The collection reflects the artistic movements that have shaped the country over recent decades.
The museum has ramps, elevators, and braille signage to welcome visitors with different needs. Audio descriptions are available for many of the displayed artworks.
A special photography collectors club was founded in 2010 and allows visitors to purchase limited edition photographs from regional and international photographers. This initiative connects the museum with the contemporary photography art scene.
