Museu Franciscano de Arte Sacra

Museu Franciscano de Arte Sacra, Sacred art museum in Santo Antonio district, Recife, Brazil.

The Museu Franciscano de Arte Sacra displays religious artworks within a historic convent complex, featuring gilded altars, baroque statues, and ornate objects made from precious metals. The collection occupies multiple rooms and levels throughout the building ensemble, which also contains the Golden Chapel of Recife.

This place began as a Franciscan convent and was converted into a museum in 1974 to preserve religious art treasures. The artworks on display span different time periods and document the history of Christian devotion in the region across several centuries.

The name comes from the Franciscan friars who shaped this place spiritually. Walking through, you see artworks that reveal how believers expressed their faith and how artistic styles changed across different periods.

The complex is located in the Santo Antonio neighborhood and is easily reached by public transportation. Keep in mind that some stairways are narrow and lighting in older rooms may be dim, so wear comfortable shoes for easy walking.

A rare find is an early depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus brought to Pernambuco in the 18th century by a missionary. This artwork is one of the earliest records of this religious devotion in Brazil and often goes unnoticed by visitors.
