Portuguese Reading Office of Pernambuco, Cultural center and library in Santo Antonio district, Recife, Brazil.
The Portuguese Reading Office of Pernambuco is a three-story building with rounded arched windows and doors that feature detailed Neo-Manueline architectural ornaments. The facade displays characteristic Portuguese design elements with decorative details framing the openings throughout the structure.
The institution was founded in 1850 as a gathering place for the Portuguese community in Pernambuco. It became an important center for strengthening ties between Brazil and Portugal throughout the 1800s.
The center holds a significant collection of Portuguese literature and regularly hosts literary gatherings that celebrate Portuguese language and culture. Visitors can experience the deep connection between Portugal and Brazil through readings, talks, and exhibitions throughout the year.
The building is easily accessible on foot in the downtown area along Rua do Imperador Pedro II. Plan your visit for weekdays when the facility is fully open and all areas are available to explore.
The concert room contains a Steinway & Sons piano from 1876 that is still used for special events. This connection to one of the world's finest piano makers shows the institution's importance during the 1800s.
