Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest, National forest in Cabedelo, Brazil
The Restinga de Cabedelo is a national forest covering 114 hectares across the municipalities of Cabedelo and João Pessoa. The protected area sits within the Atlantic Forest biome and preserves one of the last remaining restinga segments in the region.
The forest was established by federal decree in 2004 to preserve one of the last remaining Atlantic Forest segments. This action came as the loss of such habitats had become critical.
People from the Renascer neighborhood have long gathered fruits, herbs, and medicinal plants from the forest. These practices show how the local community relies on the natural resources here as part of daily life.
The site has an auditorium seating 50 people and wheelchair-accessible restrooms for visitors. Covered parking areas provide convenient access for educational and research activities.
Between 2008 and 2013, researchers carried out 32 authorized studies to develop sustainable methods for using native forest resources. This research helped increase understanding of how people and nature can coexist in the area.
