Areia Vermelha Marine State Park, Marine state park in Cabedelo, Brazil.
Areia Vermelha Marine State Park is a protected marine area off the coast of Cabedelo featuring a central sandbank that becomes visible during low tide, creating natural pools in the shallow water. The site is surrounded by coral reefs and encompasses a large expanse of coastal habitat with distinct shallow-water ecosystems.
The park was established by the state of Paraíba in 2000 through a decree to protect marine resources in the region. Its creation marked an important step in regulating tourism and preserving the coral reef system for future generations.
Marine researchers have documented 102 species of benthic macrofauna in the park, including endemic mollusks from northeastern Brazil like Voluta ebraea.
The best way to visit is by boat from Cabedelo, as the sandbank is only accessible by water. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes when walking on the coral reefs to protect themselves and avoid damaging the fragile ecosystem.
The sandbank submerges completely underwater during high tide and disappears twice daily from the surface. This constant rising and falling has made the site a special place where tides reshape the landscape in an ongoing cycle.
