The city stretches between the flat summit of Table Mountain and the Atlantic coastline, with a natural harbor, long beaches and protected reserves scattered across its territory. The center sits close to the water, while residential neighborhoods spread across the slopes and plains toward the outskirts.
The Dutch East India Company founded the settlement in the 17th century as a supply post on the route to Asia. Over the following centuries it grew into an important harbor under different rulers, before becoming part of the modern republic.

Temperatures stay mild throughout the year, with warm and dry conditions in summer and rain falling between June and August. Wind can blow hard, especially near the coast, so bringing a jacket for outings is often sensible.
The penguin colony at Boulders Beach lives right on the public shore, and visitors can watch the birds up close from wooden walkways. A network of boardwalks crosses the sand to protect nesting areas while still allowing access.
