Harare Sports Club, cricket stadium
Harare Sports Club is a sports venue in Harare, Zimbabwe, primarily used for cricket matches and capable of holding about 10,000 spectators with room for temporary stands. The grounds feature tall Jacaranda trees, a historic pavilion with glass windows, and two social bars named The Centurion and Castle Corner positioned on opposite sides of the field.
Harare Sports Club was founded in 1900 and originally called Salisbury Sports Club until renamed in 1982 when the city changed its name. The venue's defining moment came in 1992 when Zimbabwe played its first Test match here against India, establishing the ground as a key international cricket location for the newly recognized nation.
Harare Sports Club serves as a gathering place where spectators and players share moments around cricket and other sports. The bars and pavilion areas create spaces where locals naturally congregate to watch matches, celebrate victories, and build community bonds through shared sporting passion.
The grounds are flat and easy to navigate, with shaded areas beneath trees where visitors can rest comfortably. The best time to visit is during cricket matches when the atmosphere is active, though the venue remains accessible year-round for exploring the field and pavilion.
Floodlights were installed in December 2023, enabling the first international night match ever played in Zimbabwe, a T20 cricket game between Zimbabwe and Ireland. This marked a significant shift for a venue that had previously hosted only daytime matches throughout its century-long history.
