Mukumbura, human settlement in Zimbabwe
Mukumbura is a small settlement in Mashonaland Central Province in northern Zimbabwe, situated near the border with Mozambique. The land features gentle hills and sandy soil where residents grow crops like maize and sorghum and raise livestock for both subsistence and farm work.
The village was a frontline area during the Rhodesian Bush War in the 1970s and was organized with protected settlements to safeguard residents from cross-border raids. This period left lasting scars through landmines that remain buried in the area and continue to restrict development and safety today.
Access to the village is by unpaved rough roads that require sturdy four-wheel-drive vehicles, especially after rain when mud makes travel difficult. The border crossing to Mozambique accepts payment in US dollars or rand and requires valid passports and vehicle documentation for all travelers.
The village name was immortalized in a popular 1970s song that humorously described how far the settlement was from other parts of Zimbabwe. 'It's a Long Way to Mukumbura' became well-known and reflected the remote nature of this place during that era.
