Mfuwe Lodge, building in Africa
Mfuwe Lodge is a hotel in Zambia situated at the edge of South Luangwa National Park, near Mpika. It is made up of a number of stone and wood cottages grouped around a central building, all facing lagoons and open grasslands where animals move freely.
The lodge was founded by people committed to conservation who chose to protect the land rather than allow hunting. Over the years, it partnered with anti-poaching organizations to help elephant populations in the area recover from decades of heavy decline.
The lodge works closely with surrounding villages, employing local guides who grew up near the park and know the land well. Walking through the grounds, visitors can see how the local community shapes the experience here, from storytelling to tracking wildlife.
The lodge is reached by flying into Mfuwe Airport, followed by a short drive through the park. Guided game drives and bush walks go out in the early morning and late afternoon, which are the best windows for seeing animals in the open.
During the dry season, elephants regularly cross through the lodge grounds, sometimes passing just a few steps from the main entrance. Guests often watch them from the deck or through the window of their room without needing to go on a drive.
