Lake Chilwa, Endorheic lake in Zomba District, Malawi
Lake Chilwa spans 60 kilometers in length and 40 kilometers in width, featuring extensive wetlands and the central Chisi Island within its boundaries.
During his expedition in 1859, David Livingstone documented that Lake Chilwa extended 30 kilometers further south, reaching the base of Mount Mulanje.
The lake supports 335 fishing villages where more than 60,000 residents maintain traditional fishing practices and sustain local fish production.
The lake produces approximately 17,000 metric tons of fish annually, representing 20 percent of Malawi's total fish production.
The water body completely disappeared in 1968 due to extreme drought conditions, demonstrating its sensitivity to seasonal rainfall patterns.
