La Glacière is a mountain summit on Réunion island rising to approximately 2000 meters elevation. The terrain features rocky slopes and shrubby vegetation with multiple hiking paths crossing the mountainous landscape.
A cave near the summit once served as an ice storage facility, supplying frozen resources to lower island regions throughout the year. This historical use shows the important role the site played for local communities.
The area connects to four distinct hiking paths, including the Grand Bénare trail and the Forest of Bénares circuit, forming part of local outdoor recreation.
The ascent begins from a marked path starting at Maïdo parking area. The hike is demanding and takes several hours, so start early and bring adequate water and sun protection.
The slopes show clear signs of natural recovery following the 2010 fires, with young shrub vegetation emerging among the rocky terrain. This regeneration of the plant cover reveals the resilience of the mountain ecosystem.
