Newman, Administrative division in Shire of East Pilbara, Australia
Newman is an administrative town in the Shire of East Pilbara in northwestern Western Australia, located roughly 1,200 kilometers from Perth. It was founded to support iron ore mining in the region and now functions as a key administrative center for the surrounding mining operations.
The Mount Newman Mining Company, a BHP subsidiary, founded the town in 1966 to support iron ore extraction at Mount Whaleback. This establishment marked the start of the modern settlement and made it a central hub for the mining industry in the region.
The Martu people, consisting of multiple language groups, maintained their presence in this territory for approximately 45,000 years across the Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts.
The town has two primary schools, a senior high school, and the Rawa Community School to serve the local population. Visitors will find essential facilities for their stay and access to the mining areas in the surrounding region.
A private railway network connects the town to Port Hedland port and transports millions of tons of iron ore daily. This transportation system is an example of the specialized infrastructure that underlies the mining industry in this region.
