Tanjung Karang railway station, railway station in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia
Tanjung Karang is a railway station in Bandar Lampung featuring a blend of colonial and modern architecture with local Lampung cultural elements. The station operates five tracks, two for passenger trains with elevated platforms, plus dedicated freight tracks and crossover tracks for daily operations.
The station opened in 1914 by the Dutch railway company Staatsspoorwegen as part of a colonial effort to connect Sumatra with a rail line from Palembang to Bandar Lampung. Construction demanded forced labor under harsh conditions and resulted in worker casualties.
The station displays symbols of Lampung culture through Siger ornaments and traditional woven tapestry patterns on its walls, reflecting local identity. The regional song Cangget Agung is played each time trains arrive and depart, weaving local traditions into the daily rhythm of the station.
The station is centrally located in Bandar Lampung and easily accessible by private vehicles, taxis, or public transport thanks to wide roads and good connectivity. Visitors will find modern toilets, a prayer room, and waiting areas that are regularly maintained and cleaned.
While the station handles daily trains to Palembang, it was originally part of a larger Dutch expansion plan for Sumatra that was never fully realized. The incomplete historical vision shows how railways were meant to reshape the region, though circumstances altered this trajectory.
