Gunung Karang, Stratovolcano in Pandeglang, Indonesia.
Gunung Karang is a stratovolcano in Pandeglang, western Banten, Indonesia, rising 1,778 meters (5,833 feet) above sea level. This peak forms the highest point in the province and towers over the surrounding lowlands.
This dormant stratovolcano has remained silent throughout recorded history, though it is still classified as an active volcanic formation by geologists. Its last known eruption lies beyond human documentation.
Local communities visit the shrine of Tb Jaya Raksa during Maulid month, an elder from the Banten Kingdom whose resting place sits on the mountain. These religious gatherings connect the volcano to Islamic traditions and regional memory.
Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit, with ascents taking between four and six hours depending on the chosen route. The natural pool at Cikoromoi sits along the lower slopes and offers a refreshment spot for hikers.
A large stone at the bottom of the Cikoromoi pool carries Arabic inscriptions estimated to be more than 500 years old. These engravings link the site to the early Islamic influences in Banten.
