Pluit, Residential district in North Jakarta, Indonesia
Pluit is a coastal residential district in North Jakarta, situated along Jakarta Bay. It mixes older housing blocks with newer residential complexes and commercial areas that run along its main roads.
The district takes its name from a Dutch vessel called "De Fluit" that ran aground near the mouth of the Angke River in the 17th century. Coastal settlements grew around that spot over the following decades and shaped the area as it exists today.
The name Pluit comes from a Dutch word meaning "whistle" or "flute", taken from the ship that gave the area its identity. Chinese temples, mosques, and local food stalls sit close together here, reflecting the mix of communities that settled along this stretch of coast.
The district is reachable from central Jakarta by bus or private vehicle along main roads. Because the area is spread out, having your own transport or using a ride-hailing app makes it much easier to get around between the different parts.
Parts of the district were built on land reclaimed from the sea, and private yacht docks are visible along the northern waterfront today. Walking along that edge, you can clearly see where the original coastline ended and where new ground was added.
