New Pelion Hut, Mountain hut in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia
New Pelion Hut is a lodging facility with six separate rooms and capacity for 60 people in a national park of mountains and lakes. The interior features a large common area that can be divided by a rolling door.
Built in 2001 by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, it replaced an older hut from the mining era that had fallen into disrepair. The new structure became part of modern visitor infrastructure in the region.
Hikers from around the world meet here during their multi-day walk on the Overland Track and exchange stories about their outdoor journey.
The facility offers basic amenities like bunk beds without mattresses, composting toilets, and a gas heater that operates in timed cycles. Visitors should prepare for simple conditions and bring warm bedding and clothing.
From here, hikers can climb Mount Ossa, Tasmania's highest peak, along with five other summits in the area. The hut serves as a base for climbers wanting to explore multiple peaks during their stay.
