Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail, New Zealand cycling and tramping trail
The Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail is a long-distance cycling route on New Zealand's South Island that stretches from the peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook to the coast near Ōamaru. The route covers nine sections with varying landscapes, from snow-capped mountains through lakes and river valleys to open plains and farmland.
The region has a history of hydroelectric development connected to dam construction like Benmore Dam, which shaped the valley and its economy. The trail itself partly follows old railway routes built in the early 1900s to connect remote communities.
The trail links different landscapes and communities that reflect life across New Zealand's South Island. Along the way, you pass small settlements and farms where local people use the route for recreation and daily activities.
The trail is divided into nine sections and can be completed in full over several days or explored in shorter day trips. Accommodation, food, and supplies are available along the route, with options in small towns like Twizel and Ōamaru.
Part of the route can be crossed by helicopter when crossing the Tasman River, which is practical especially for cyclists with gear. This option is usually booked in advance and depends on weather conditions.
