Anna Creek station, Cattle station in South Australia
Anna Creek Station is a working cattle property situated between Coober Pedy and Lake Eyre in South Australia. The property covers dry land where livestock graze under harsh desert conditions.
The property started in 1863 as a sheep farm, but dingo attacks forced a change to cattle. The site moved in 1872 and has raised livestock ever since.
The Peake Ruins within the station grounds contain a telegraph office, cemetery, mine site, and lime kilns registered in South Australian Heritage.
Staff use aircraft and motorbikes to round up herds across the wide open land. The remote location means supply routes and communication require careful planning.
Mail deliveries reach the property twice a week through a special desert route. A small helicopter allows the staff quick checks of the wide area and scattered water points.
