City of Brisbane, Local government district in Queensland, Australia.
City of Brisbane is a local government area in Queensland, Australia, that stretches along the Brisbane River and includes both the city center and numerous residential neighborhoods. The area extends from inner districts to outer suburbs and takes in hills, riverbanks and broad green zones.
Twenty separate local government areas joined together in 1924 to form this entity, which became the largest municipal administration in Australia at the time. The merger was meant to coordinate planning and infrastructure across a large, rapidly developing region.
The name comes from the river, which honors Thomas Brisbane, a Scottish governor from the early 19th century. Parks and green spaces along the water serve as gathering spots for festivals and markets, where the multicultural character of the city becomes visible.
Visitors find public transport such as buses, ferries and trains connecting different parts of the area. Many parts are accessible on foot or by bike, with cycle paths along the river especially popular.
The city manages more than 2,000 parks and open spaces, including some of the largest urban nature reserves in Australia. Mangroves and wetlands along the coast provide habitats for numerous waterbirds and other animals that can often be observed during a walk.
