Jayawijaya

The Jayawijaya Regency extends across 13,925 square kilometers of mountainous terrain in the Baliem Valley, with Wamena serving as its administrative center.

The regency underwent significant administrative changes in 2002 and 2008, resulting in the creation of seven new separate regencies from its original territory.

The indigenous Dani, Lani, and Yali peoples maintain their traditional ways of life throughout the forty districts of the Jayawijaya Regency.

Access to Wamena, the regency capital, requires air travel from Jayapura, with flights operating daily and taking approximately 30 minutes.

Located at an elevation of 1,978 meters, the regency maintains a population density of 20 people per square kilometer across its highland territory.
