Bobcat Trail Habitation Cave, Archaeological habitation cave in Hawaii County, United States.
Bobcat Trail Habitation Cave is an ancient cave system located in the Puuanahulu region of North Kona District at elevations between 5,100 and 9,000 feet. The site contains multiple chambers that once served as living quarters and storage spaces.
Ancient Hawaiians inhabited this cave system beginning around 700 AD and continued using it through the 18th century. The site was central to their hunting and gathering activities in the island's upland forests.
The cave served as a gathering place for collecting forest birds whose feathers held significance in local ceremonies and traditions. The surrounding plants provided materials for healing practices that were woven into daily life.
The site is located in a dry region that receives little rain each year, so bring plenty of water when visiting. Access requires proper permits from authorities for any archaeological activities or research.
The cave sits in one of the driest parts of the islands, receiving only about 20 inches of rain yearly, yet water dripped from the cave ceiling providing a steady supply. This water source was essential to survival in such an arid high-altitude location.
